NCSB History

The North Coast Symphonic Band is your band!

  • Wind players encouraged formation of the band in 1979.
  • The band consists of musicians of all ages from high school students to retired seniors and from all walks of life. There are music professionals in the group as well as students, teachers and a principal, doctors and nurses, contractors, businessmen, and a fireman – all of whom have made music a life-long avocation.
  • The North Coast Symphonic Band presents low-cost musical entertainment for audiences in the greater North Coast community and Southwest Washington and provides an opportunity for instrumental musicians to improve their skills.
  • New members are welcome. There are no dues or fees. Contact Dennis Hale (503 325-3891) or Janet Bowler (503 325-2431). Tuition-paying students can receive college credit.

The North Coast Symphonic Band sets high musical standards and creates quality musical opportunities for musicians and audience alike.

  • Dick Boberg returns for a third season as Conductor of the North Coast Symphonic Band. Past conductors include Art Vaughn and James Smith.
  • Guest conductors and composers have been lavish in their praise of the North Coast Symphonic Band and include: Theodore Bloomfield, Elliot del Borgo, Francis McBeth, David Holsinger, David Becker, Aldo Raphael Forte, Thom Ritter George, Larry Johnson, and Carolyn Vian.
  • The North Coast Symphonic Band proved to be one of the finest community bands I have heard, complete with strong players and a strong season musical plan. The NCSB is a jewel in Astoria’s cultural life.” Guest Conductor Thom Ritter George, May 2003

The North Coast Symphonic Band begins its third year as a self-supporting organization.

  • Clatsop College sponsored the band from 1979 to 2003 and still supports the band with instruments, rehearsal facilities, publicity, programs, and box office.
  • Donors saved the band from demise when it lost major funding from Clatsop College in 2003-04. Substantial financial support came from Jack Mayfield and friends in Texas, the Autzen Foundation, and our numerous local friends and supporters.
  • The NCSB is a 501(c)3 organization and donations to the NCSB are tax-deductible.
  • Expenses still exceed ticket revenue; we need your support and contributions. Please consider making a donation and becoming a patron today.
